I will be a mechanic and first charge during the season at Fimbulisen with Project Ice rise. After good preparation I hope I can use my powers to get tracked vehicles and snowmobiles to go safe around the ice shelf. This will be my sixth summer season in Antarctica. Previously I have been involved in building research station Troll for year-round station, and participated in the great traverse with tracked vehicles from Troll to the South Pole.
I work at the fire department in Sandefjord, and is trained as a firefighter, mechanic and ambulance driver. I have a strong interest in research and exploration in Antarctica, and look forward to the opportunity to become better acquainted with Queen Maud Land. When the season is over, I look even more forward to coming home to Lisa and the kids Sigurd (4), Hannah (11), Steffen (21) and Marius (24).
Best regards Kjetil Bakkland
